Over the years, Challenge Mountain has integrated many forms of art into its programming, ranging from stained glass, painting, woodworking, mosaics, ceramics, and dance/movement. Thanks to anonymous donor support, Challenge Mountain and Crooked Tree Arts Center formed a partnership to offer consistent weekly classes in the creative arts to people living with cognitive and physical disabilities.
Typically six-week sessions, participants learn art fundamentals and art history while applying skills to create everything from paintings to three-dimensional crafts. “Partnerships with organizations like Crooked Tree help us to expand our adaptive program offerings,” shares Challenge Mountain Executive Director Elizabeth Gertz. “Rather than reinventing activities for our participants, we’re working side-by-side to embrace the best of each organization…it just makes everyone stronger.”
Participants gain personal fulfillment through a sense of accomplishment and a feeling of acceptance that translates positively into their everyday lives. Challenge Mountain programming experiences — from art programming to adaptive outdoor recreation — create positive individual and group development, while building social and character skills.
Challenge Mountain programs are centered on having fun, making and sustaining friendships, building confidence and independence, and, most importantly, fostering positive and hopeful expectations for living life with a disability.
