Thanks to the generous support of our community foundations and a major donor, the Resale Store parking lot project is underway!

Though it’s less recognizable without snow and ice, shoppers and donors to the Challenge Mountain Resale Store know the parking lot has been in ill repair and lacks a storm water drainage system.

“An anonymous $15,000 matching grant through the Charlevoix County Community Foundation has us inches away from reaching our fundraising goal,” explains Elizabeth Looze, Executive Director. Donations are $2,800 shy of obtaining the full $15,000 matching grant. “We are so close, and meeting this goal means Challenge Mountain would not need to finance the balance.”

If 100 people give just $28,
Challenge Mountain will
receive the full matching grant.

Several generous grants and donations propelled the project forward. “We would like to recognize the following individuals and organizations for their significant contributions,” shares Looze. Challenge Mountain plans to publish a full list of generous donors upon project completion.

  • Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation
  • Charlevoix County Community Foundation
  • Petoskey Rotary Park Fund
  • The Musson Family
  • Great Lakes Energy People Fund
  • Frey Foundation
  • Boyne Resorts
  • EJ USA, Inc.

When snow and ice melt, then refreezes in low areas, it creates  hazardous conditions for donors, volunteers and shoppers. “This winter, with warm thaws followed by below zero temps, makes the need even more apparent,” shares Staci Payton, Resale Store Manager. Snow, rain water and run-off from higher elevations pool in various locations making it difficult to navigate in and out of the store.

“This is an aggressive project,” shares Executive Director Elizabeth Looze, “however, it is definitely needed. Improvements will provide safer access for shoppers and donors. And, new drainage and gutter systems will prevent dangerous ice conditions in winter and standing rain water spring through fall.”

Aside from being a great place to shop for high-quality, low-cost items, the Challenge Mountain Resale Store is much more than just another thrift store. The Store is the largest funding source for Challenge Mountain programs and an even greater community resource. Store revenue helps Challenge Mountain enhance the lives of an increasing number of individuals living with disabilities through adaptive recreational programming. “Every purchase makes a difference in the lives of participants and families living with disabilities,” explains Resale Store Manager Staci Payton.
